Gas burners in use β€” handle with care

πŸ”₯ Handle Gas With Care

Follow all safety guidelines when using LPG cylinders at home or at work. Your safety is our priority.

1. Storing Your Gas Cylinder

  • Always store upright. Gas cylinders must be kept in an upright position at all times β€” never lay them on their side.

  • Store outdoors or in a ventilated area. Never store a cylinder inside a sealed room, garage, or basement where gas could accumulate.

  • Keep away from heat sources. Store at least 1 metre away from stoves, heaters, candles, naked flames, or direct sunlight.

  • Secure the valve. Always close the cylinder valve when not in use, and fit the valve cap if the cylinder is not connected.

  • Keep out of children's reach. Store cylinders in a place that is not accessible to children.

Do NOT store gas cylinders:

  • Inside bedrooms, bathrooms, or basements
  • Underneath staircases
  • In vehicles for extended periods
  • Near electrical panels or meters

2. Detecting a Gas Leak

  • Do a soapy water test. Apply soapy water to hose connections and the valve. Bubbles indicate a leak β€” never use a flame to check.

  • Smell for gas. LPG has a distinct smell added intentionally. If you smell gas, act immediately.

  • Listen for hissing sounds. A hissing sound near the cylinder or regulator could indicate a gas leak.

  • Check for frost or ice. Ice or frost forming on the cylinder may indicate a major leak β€” evacuate immediately.

If You Suspect a Leak:

  • Turn off the valve immediately
  • Do NOT switch on/off any light switches or electrical appliances
  • Open all doors and windows
  • Evacuate everyone from the building
  • Call 10177 from a safe distance

3. Connecting Your Cylinder

  • Use the correct regulator. Always use a regulator that matches your cylinder size and type. Do not mix regulators.

  • Inspect the hose before connecting. Look for cracks, splits, or wear in the hose. Replace damaged hoses immediately β€” do not use tape as a fix.

  • Ensure the appliance is off. Make sure all burners and appliances are turned off before connecting or disconnecting a cylinder.

  • Open the valve slowly. After connecting the regulator, open the valve slowly and check for leaks with soapy water.

  • Hose length. Keep hoses as short as possible (max 1.5m). Longer hoses can trip people or be damaged more easily.

4. Safe Daily Usage

  • Never leave cooking unattended. Always stay near your stove when a flame is lit, especially with children around.

  • Turn off after use. Always turn off both the appliance and the cylinder valve after cooking.

  • Use in ventilated spaces. Always cook in well-ventilated areas. Never use a gas stove as a heater in an enclosed room β€” it can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Keep flammables away. Keep paper, clothing, curtains, and other flammable materials away from the gas stove and cylinder.

  • Don't misuse the flame. Never use a gas flame to warm a room, dry clothes, or for any purpose other than cooking or its intended use.

Warning: Carbon Monoxide

Burning gas in an enclosed space without ventilation produces carbon monoxide β€” a colourless, odourless, deadly gas. Always ensure fresh air circulation when using gas appliances.

5. Transporting Gas Cylinders

  • Close the valve completely. Before transporting, ensure the cylinder valve is fully closed and the cap is fitted.

  • Transport upright. Always transport cylinders in an upright, secured position. Avoid laying them on their sides.

  • Ventilate your vehicle. Keep a window open when transporting gas in a car. Never leave gas in a closed vehicle in the sun.

  • Do not leave in a hot car. Heat causes pressure build-up that can be dangerous. Do not leave cylinders in an unventilated vehicle.

  • Limit time in vehicle. Transport gas only when needed. Don't store a full cylinder in your vehicle long-term.
